Week 5 Human variation and race

1.) An environmental stress that negatively impacts the survival of humans by disturbing homeostasis is heat. Heat stroke, which raises your body temperature to 104 degrees, is caused by physical activity in high temperatures for a long period of time. Heat can also cause heat rashes and heat exhaustion. Heat rashes are caused by clogged sweat glands from too much sweating. While Heat exhaustion occurs when you have been exposed to heat for too long and are suffering from dehydration. 2.) Short term: One way that humans have adapted to the environmental stress of heat is by sweating. Sweating occurs when your body temperature rises due to high temperatures or physical activity. The sweat evaporates from the skin's surface which removes excess heat from the body and allows the body to cool down.  Facultative: A facultative way the body has adapted to heat stress is vasodilation. In this process, blood is brought to the surface of the skin which then lets the heat exit ...

week 4 Piltdown Hoax

In Sussex, England Charles Dawson claimed to find a portion of a skull in a small village called Piltdown on December 18, 1912. This finding automatically created an uprising in the scientific community because Dawson believed he had discovered something that had been missing between ape and man.  Later on, scientists looked at the fossil more in depth, they found that the canine tooth had been filed down and pieces such as the front jaw were broken off. Scientists found that a big part of being able to identify the difference of apes and humans was from the front jaw. Due to the fact that the jaw was not present they became vulnerable and went with the first statement that had been told. In 1996, Martin  Hitten was found with some of the broken pieces from the skull. It is not guaranteed that Hitten was hiding them for Dawson but that is what most believe. A positive for the science community that came from the hoax was more insight on fossils and better technology to be a...

week 3 Analogy and Homology

Image
1.) Homologous traits A. Briefly describe the two different species that possess the homologous trait. The two species that possess a homologous trait are a dolphin and human. The trait they share is a similar bone structure in the pectoral fin and human arm that consists of the humerus, ulna, and phalanges. B. Describe the homologous trait of each species, focusing on the differences in structure and function of the trait.   Why do these homologous traits exhibit differences between the two species?   Make sure your explanation is clear and complete. Although they have similar structures, they do not have the same function. Dolphins’ pectoral fins are used to steer them through water and for balance. While humans arms are used for things such as lifting and climbing. Another difference between the two is the bone structure, fins have a compact structure while human arms have a longer and more spread out structure. C. Who was (generally, not specifical...

week 2 Protein Synthesis

GTUATACACCTAAGGTAGTGTTAGCTGAAAATCTATCCGGA

Scientific Method

Scenario:  About mid-way through the semester, in a class you are taking on campus, you become increasingly irritated by a student who sits in the back of the class.  The student always manages to fall asleep about 15 minutes into the lecture.  Normally it wouldn’t bother you, but occasionally he lets out a snore that breaks your attention and disrupts the class.  The instructor has repeatedly asked the student to work harder to stay awake, but he is not having any success. 1. It is possible that the student could be up working late hours at a job. 2. Test: A.) I would test my hypothesis by scheduling earlier hours for the student to work. B.) If the student was able to stay awake during class, my test would support my hypothesis. C.) The student falling asleep in class would falsify my hypothesis. 3. An example of an untestable explanation would be that there is an on and off switch in the students brain that someone switches off to make him sleep ever...
